Family History and  Family Violence, A Review Essay

A Social History of Family Life.

What is happening to the family's today?

If we give credence to contemporary reports, the American family is either obsolete or disinte grating. As evidence of the family's demise, public leaders, social scien tists, medical personnel, and social workers point to rising divorce rates, falling birthrates, the growth in single-parent families, the increase in the proportion of working mothers, changes in family attitudes and values, and the high incidence of family violence. Statistics appear to support a declension model. One-half of all first marriages end in separation or divorce, and about one-half of all children spend some time in a one parent family. For black children these social trends have become the dominant pattern, five out of six spend at least part of their childhood, with one parent, 55 percent in female-headed households. In addition, fertility levels have declined from a median of 3.1 children per family in 1960 to 1.9 currently, illegitimacy ratios have climbed and women are working outside the home in increasing numbers; in 1988, 60 percent of mothers with children were in the work force. These social trends have. Their counterparts in contemporary attitudes toward family life.
